Symbol Meaning
Semicolon – “My Story isn’t Over!” The semicolon (;) is a powerful symbol that represents resilience, hope, and encouragement. Within the mental health community is it more discrete to relate to one another of their trials and afflictions with regards to mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, self-harm suicidal thoughts and ideation and even surviving a suicidal attempt. Their decision to display and wear this symbol reminds them (and others who relate) to “push through”, “carry on”, and “fight, yet another day”.
Grammatically, a semicolon is used when one could have ended the sentence (or metaphorically, their life). However, they decided not to end the sentence; yet the author chose not to. Metaphorically, the reflection of the person to choose to continue to persevere and live, in lieu of ending their life is a powerful symbol that they are deciding NOT to end the story of their life. It gives them empowerment to commit and remind themselves to endure their journey here on Earth.
Lastly, it is used within the community to bring awareness and support to those who suffer through so much pain and affliction. This sacred symbol can strike conversations and educate people and end the stigma that mental illness is a real disease that is becoming infectious and seemingly an epidemic.
